That never really changes even with all the upgrades you get. It becomes evident about a half hour in that the face of the game, Arias, is the weakest of the three starting characters. If I were to have one issue, it would be that the character balance is kind of a mess. Yeah, it doesn't look as good as the big name titles, but it plays so much better. The map is huge and utterly addictive to explore the wealth of secrets and hidden nooks and crannies just staggering the platforming is pixel-perfect the writing and characters are solid (but also admittedly not the game's focus and is only half there).Įvery necessity for a great Metroidvania is met - Astalon is simply a modern classic. One of the best Metroidvanias of recent years - a big improvement on the (also wonderful) Castle in the Darkness* from some of the same team.
